Fixit has completed the traditional disassembly of the latest Apple AirPods and, as promised by Apple, this is bad news for repairs.
The organization gave the noise protection outbreaks a high and zero repair score and found that the repair was impractical and inexpensive due to its “non-modular, glued design and lack of spare parts”. That’s the same score as on both versions of the original AirPods.
As soon as your AirPods Pro’s battery deteriorates for $ 249 and eventually goes flat, there is no way to repair it yourself. Instead, you’ll need to return it to Apple for recycling or the $ 49 per headset “Battery Service” program out of warranty.
The disassembly reveals some interesting details about the design of the headphones. First, the fact that they are a third heavier than the original AirPods thanks to new features such as active noise cancellation and an internal microphone.
Disassembly also indicates that the user-replaceable part of the headset, the silicone tip, uses a custom design that prevents compatibility with third-party models. However, the popularity of the AirPods ensures that other companies will soon be giving advice from third parties.
Most intriguing is the discovery of a watch battery in every headset. iFixit notes that it is a battery that resembles the battery used in the Samsung Galaxy Buds and could be replaced. The same does not apply to AirPods Pro, whose battery is connected via a welded cable.
Not surprisingly, AirPods Pro is a disposable product that is as small and lightweight as possible. Compared to the amount of waste generated in the consumer electronics industry, the environmental impact of each AirPod Pro is likely to be low.
Given the amount of renewable energy that Apple consumes in its buildings and the amount of recycled materials it uses in its products, it is a shame to see one of its biggest product successes so available in recent years.
